Car Explosion Outside My NYC Apartment Last Night

This is real. About 1am I heard an explosion and more loud popping sounds for the next 20 minutes or so. Finally going outside, I saw several cars ablaze. The fire department came and put it out after much work. The morning after was shocking.

This looks like some Iraq ish right here. Check the video on YouTube and my Flickr photo album.

Inwood Car Explosion - 23

The most disturbing part was that last night, I saw only one other neighbor go outside to investigate. A car exploded and took out several others, and no one could be bothered??? Is this normal?

BTW, our CSI skills suggest that someone ditched a stolen car and blew it up to cover the evidence.

if there are flames and exploding bits involved, i ain't going near it. i'm calling the po-po and the fire folks from the comfort and safety of my apartment. let the professionals get all up close and personal. maybe that's why no one went out to investigate.

people usually duck and hide during this kind of sh*t. hell, i live on seaman ave, and it's going down in the park, the best thing to do is STAY INDOORS. you never know how quickly the other side is going to retaliate. thanks for giving us a heads up and the photos are great.

keep us posted!

haven't gotten any new info. guess i'll look into a police blotter announcement or something. there was a woman with a ridiculous camera on the scene. those photos would have ended up somewhere, maybe local press

As one of your neighbors, I have the following to say:

- I was shocked to go out and see the charred remains.
- Relieved that I didn't park there - that is where my car usually ends up.
- Heartbroken for the people whose cars were destroyed or damaged.
- Amazed that I had not heard anything the night before. My apartment is on the other side and I was passed out from cold medication, but still, I would have thought that something like that would have stirred me. Of course, I didn't know there was a fire IN the building a couple of weeks ago until it had already been put out.

The owner of the Subaru said that later that day she was in the playground with her child and they met someone whose child had leukemia. It definitely put everything in perspective.

I saw some dudes shoot somebody outside my apartment in Chicago once (scary neighborhood, cheap rent!) and, while I called 911, I'll be damned if I was going out there to investigate. Hellllll no. Even though I saw the dudes in question jump in a truck and race away...still! God knows who else was still lurking out there. Just two days before I'd come home and found a suspicious character lying prone on our stoop.

I imagine most of the people in your neighborhood were thinking the same thing - what if something else blew up next??!
Scary.

See...I told you to move to Brooklyn. That kind of thing only happens there for insurance purposes, is much more controlled and relegated to certain areas!

That's not good, if they want to get anything, they should not let others suffer too. Cars are really expensive and even though they're covered with insurance, it's still inconvenient to do that.

God!!! that is a very bad accident.. When moving apartments you should have to look and investigate if the place is safe..

"kabboooomm" i'd always want to witness an action like that but i can't have the opportunity, explosion like this often is caused by some wire connection or the engine, but sometimes as what you had said it is done for the sake of insurance

That car explosion in NYC is such a horrible accident. Hope it will not happen again.

Car explosion in the night? I figure it's quite a shock, I hope all the cars around it are covered with insurance, I can't remember if I ever discussed with my insurance company the clause of car explosion, those people could use a http://www.365articles.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=184260&mode=&order=0&thold=0" rel="nofollow">car insurance advice here.

I've never seen a car explode except from the ones in movies. It's terrifying. We're supposed to feel safe in our cars but seeing how easy one can explode makes me think I should use my bicycle more.
