Whiskey My man C.C. Chapman has a new project afoot called "Passion Hit TV," and I'm honored to be his first profile! Check out the video above and stay connected to this cool show which "focuses on people, companies and events that have taken something they loved doing and turned it into something much more. You’ll learn about their journey and what inspires them to keep going forward. The goal is to inspire you to stop dreaming about the future and to make it happen."
By the way, C.C. and I recorded this in Louisville, KY while at the amazing Idea Festival. I can't recommend this annual event enough. Yes, they paid for me to be there and blog/tweet about it, so there's your danged disclosure. But even without that, the event is amazingly diverse, inspiring and in a great city who's unofficial motto is "Just Add Bourbon."
I banter with Melissa Harris (no relation to Rick) Perry on MSNBC

whiskeyfriday This was so much fun. Last night, I got to join friend, awesome person and America's Substitute Teacher Melissa Harris Perry as she covered in for Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC's The Last Word. They invited me on to talk a bit about The Onion's political coverage. It felt like an on-air tweetup. I wish we could do this on every Whiskey Friday.
I also have to add that doing cable news segments in which I'm in the same room and at the same table as the host is so much more fun and human than the disembodied, Futurama, talking head-in-a-box method. I don't mind being a talking head. I'd just prefer not to be a talking head in a box.
BTW, you're going to want to mark your calendars. Tuesday October 4 at 10pm is the return of Onion News Network on IFC. This year, the news is even less merciful.

My Mikwaukee Public Radio interview with Gideon Yago

radio A few weeks ago, Marquette University brought me out to Wisconsin to join journalists from Fox, MSNBC, CBS and others to discuss the future of journalism. While out there, I tought an intro class on media studies, met with the campus chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists and headlined a campus comedy show. It was a great trip!
Among all this greatness, however, a highlight was getting to hang out with Gideon Yago, formerly of MTV News. One of the journalism panelists commented something along the lines of "Why are we getting schooled on journalism by the guys from MTV and The Onion?"
Gideon and I got to share the mic in a fun interview on "Lake Effect" hosted by Mitch Teich of Milwaukee Public Radio. Their description of the segment is below:
We talk with two journalists about whether entertainment has eclipsed news coverage. Gideon Yago was born in Madison, but raised in New York. He worked as a correspondent for MTV News, winning awards for his coverage of the war in Iraq. More recently, he has worked as a screenwriter. Baratunde Thurston is the director of digital for The Onion. They spoke with Mitch Teich while they were in Milwaukee for a forum at Marquette University about whether entertainment has eclipsed news.

Yesterday afternoon, I made my debut on Keith Olbermann for his top story: the recent flipping of two Democratic state reps in Texas has given that state's extreme right wing Republican Party a supermajority in the legislature; that's 101 of 150 seats. Olbermann's point was that this development makes Texas the first "Tea Party State," and I was invited on to help him imagine, comedically and legitimately, what that might look like.
Many of you may not know or remember, but I was a precinct captain for the Obama campaign in Dallas. Here are some of my posts from that era. Thanks to Team Olbermann for having me on
Yep, I was in a video on the AOL.com homepage. Yes, AOL
AOL is back yall! Really! No CDs jamming up your mailbox this time. The company is a lot more about content than ever before, and not the walled garden variety. Just good, interesting stuff. I first noticed the shift with the launch of Politics Daily a while back which features some actually quite interesting coverage and commentary.
Today, I played a small role in AOL's evolution by helping NextNewNetworks debut a new, daily show called The ONE Daily. It's a simple setup: one person talks directly to camera about the one story most on his or her mind. The show will be published every weekday at 1pm. Get it? The ONE at 1!
Here's the first ever show featuring yours truly talking about Conan's return.

Video I love John Fugelsang. We've done some standup shows together, and I just love the guy.
First, you have to respect the man's opening. I kind of sat there slack-jawed while he wove current events, intelligent themes and a healthy dose of wit into the show's opening monologue. Dude belongs on the teevee! We had fun through the rest of the show bouncing between serious and comedic while discussing the president's tough spot (taking fire from left and right), Boehner's obsession with Orange-Americans and bullying.
Thanks to GRITtv for having me. It's been a while since I could actually make it on the show.
Another great TWiT appearance with Brian Brushwood and Felicia Day!!!
My love for Brian is well-known. For someone I disagree with so much, we have the best debates! And Felicia Day. Web crush moment!!! Enjoy this episode. I did!
