Live Appearances

Today at 430pm ET I'll be doing a web chat about things "black folk don't" do, allegedly

The things black folk don't do is the alleged part. There is no allegedness to my appearance. That is happening. Check out the site hosting Angela Tucker's cool video project which certainly shares the spirit of my forthcoming book, How To Be Black. (pre-order on amazon!)

The live chat is on Facebook. 1630 hrs ET

no seriously, it's not alleged. it's happening.

unless black folk don't do live web chats.

now i've confused myself.

Call in at 3pm ET today to ask me questions about my triple threateningness

triple threat

My friend Hashim Warren has a cool site and service over at Career Green Light. I'm part of an interview series he's running, and he wrote the following about today's interview:

This upcoming Monday I’m continuing Career Green Light’s “Personal Branding for the Entertainment Industry” seminar series with an interview with Baratunde Thurston, a career ninja in our business with an awesome triple threat.

Baratunde works in front of the camera as the host of the Science Channel’s “Future Of” and behind the scenes as the online editor ofThe Onion.

Baratunde has agreed to let me grill him on this teleseminar about how he used his triple threat to build his personal brand and attract opportunities to him.

On this call we’ll cover

  • Choosing a mix of talents that work together
  • Deciding which passions to ignore (Baratunde almost became a priest and wood carver!)
  • Why relying on lucky breaks is better than career planning

The dial-in info to join the chat is here:

Monday, Sept. 20th, 3PM-3:45PM EST (dial in early to get settled)
Dial-in Number: (605) 562-3000
Participant Access Code: 611304#

And sign up for the Career Green Light newsletter for a heads up on future interviews and to get the recording of this session after we're done.

Me on Fox 5 NYC's Good Day Street Talk talking healthcare reform

I was brought in to represent a comedic perspective, but I had to drop some facts in as well. I didn't get to counter all the misinformation, but got some points across and actually had fun. I learned back in Boston to be able to distinguish between Fox News Channel (on cable) and the local Fox affiliates. Anyway, enjoy.

My Blogger Segment On Torture w/ Video

Here's the video! I couldn't see any of the other participates so hope that didn't come across as weird. What did come across to me as weird is that we're having a big debate about whether people involved in violating domestic and international law should be prosecuted. I tried many different angles during this segment in an attempt to highlight the absurd notion that we should only look forward. I hope one of them stuck. Always appreciate any feedback. I'll be back on Monday at 12:10pm ET. Topic TBD Oh and thanks to Huffington Post for letting me use their office space for the webcast. Update 4:45pm. Oh dear god. I just noticed the caption on the video refers to us as The Blogger Bunch. As in The Brady Bunch. What has happened to the most trusted name in news!?

Baratunde's Yay Area Office Hours Sunday at Revolution Cafe

As I used to do in college and have started doing again in my travels, I'm holding office hours as a way to connect with my Bay Area people and have them connect with each other. I'll be sitting (ok squatting) at Revolution Cafe in the Mission all Sunday afternoon from about 3:30 to 7:30.

Revolution cafe SF

Revolution Cafe 3428 22nd Street, between Mission and Bartlett

My flight out is at 10pm, so I'll head out straight from there. The last time I was there in February, I unlocked an iPhone I picked up for $50 after it was run over by a car. In my recent Boston office hours, we got into discussions of feminism, immersive gaming and manipulating the electorate. What craziness will ensue on this trip? The Yay is a magical place, so come by and let's hold palaver and more. If you use Facebook, you can find the event listed there, RSVP etc.
