In answer to the Day 1 Question “When Did You First Realize You Were Black (or X)?”
That Awkward Moment When You Just Come From Nigeria and Have to Tick Off the Racial Category Box
Everyone in Nigeria had dark skin. In fact when someone says “you’re black o”, they mean your skin is quite literally a blue-black color. So imagine my confusion when I came to the US and all of a sudden was being told, ‘oh you’re black’. I’d look at my orange-brown skin color then look back at the person speaking like they had lost their mind. And it took me a long while to learn to tick off the Black/African American box on the racial category forms rather than just writing, “Other: Nigerian”. Oh, the awkward moments that made when I’d ask people, what box tick off…Good times, America, Good times.
